About the author
I am an undergraduate university student from Canada. My major is Media, Information and Technoculture and my Writing Certificate is in progress.
I’ve gained knowledge about online relationships in a course called “Social Networking in Everyday Life: Social Relations, Social Movements, and Privacy.” I wrote an essay about the positive and negative aspects of online relationships, and learned a lot of interesting information, concepts and theories related to social networking. Online dating and developing relationships online is lacking research and study, but I’m hoping that will expand in the future.
Additionally, I wrote a magazine feature for a Publication Writing course. The feature was about dating within social media. I interviewed a professional online dating coach and several Tumblr users that experienced positive and negative online relationships. I plan to keep working on it and hopefully have it published!
Why am I interested in romantic online relationships?
I was fascinated by whether or not people could fall in love without meeting in person. Based on what I’ve read in academic journals, it is highly likely to fall in love with someone online, and it can happen very quick. Intimacy, commitment, trust, and communication is heightened in online relationships compared to offline relationships. That causes two people to fall in love quicker online than offline. Not many people are aware of this information, and it is surprising since social media is a main method of communicating with others today.
What inspired me to learn about online relationships?
I’ve always had an interest in social media and how relationships are formed online. I completed a course called “Social Networking in Everyday Life: Social Relations, Social Movements, and Privacy” at my University. That course inspired me to learn more about online relationships, especially the interaction and development of romantic online relationships. Secondly, I met my SO online. We met in person after one year of communicating through instant messaging, Skype, Oovoo, phone calls, texting, and letters. Meeting in person strengthened our bond and made our relationship stronger.
